While the two covers share a similar concept, they clearly demonstrate what causes one to have a great deal more impact. The first flaw in the Usher cover is the tank top that can be seen in his portrait. It would have much better if the photographer had simply had him take it off. It really interferes with the composition. The second problem is the flat contrast. The third and most important issue is the lack of expression on Usher's face. In this case, there is absolutely no question about which one did it best.

According to our AlbumArtExchange Blog poll, the best album cover for the week of April 24, 2012 is This Machine by The Dandy Warhols. The cover received 32% of the votes cast by our readers. Peter Gabriel's New Blood Live in London was a very close second with 29%. Jack White's Blunderbuss and Torche's Harmonicraft tied for third with 15% each.
The painting for the winning cover is by fine artist Hickory Mertsching. I believe this is Mersching's first album cover. I was not able to find additional credits. There are two versions of the cover. One is the full painting (right). The other is a detail (below). I like both versions. The painting is of such great quality that both work quite well. I hope that we see other album covers by this artist.

According to retail listings, the album will be available in both standard and deluxe versions. The Facebook posting did not specify whether or not the two versions would have different artwork. Also, it did not provide credits for art direction and photography.
