According to our AlbumArtExchange Blog poll, the best album best album for the week of August 23, 2011 is Muppets: The Green Album. The compilation featuring various artists such as Weezer, OK Go, and My Morning Jacket performing songs made popular by the Muppets received 46% of the vote. I'm With You by Red Hot Chili Peppers was second with 31%. One Spark by Gabe Dixon was a distant third with 12%.
The album is currently ranked #1 in sales in the Children's Music and #24 in Pop by Amazon.com. The album cover features "typographic portrait" of Kermit the Frog. This type of design using typography to create a face became a popular online trend a couple of years ago. As shown by the typographic portrait of Jimi Hendricks (right), the technique works well for portraits of musicians. It was only a matter of time until it was used for an album cover. Having it used for Kermit is a surprise.
The images that result from this technique have a 1960s psychedelic feel to them. However, it is certainly easier to create these images on a computer rather than doing them by hand the way that artists did during the psychedelic era.
I do not have a credit for the art director and graphic designer for this album cover. The album was released by Walt Disney Records, so that is understandable. Disney rarely credits individual graphic designers.
The poll featuring this week's new music releases will be posted this evening. Come back and cast your vote for your favorite album cover.
